How to pack for an internship abroad: 5 things you should not forget test

It may seem just like any other task, but packing for an internship abroad requires a lot of planning and organization. Most people start planning what to bring to their trip weeks in advance. If you are doing so now, you should read the following pieces of advice on what to pay attention to when the times comes to pack for an internship abroad:

1- Make a List

It is not uncommon to forget something when we pack for a trip; whether it is your favorite pair of socks or important documentation, you should keep track of the things you want to bring. For this reason, it is always a good idea to write a list and check for the items during packing time and after it, as well.

2- Use all the Space

There are many packing techniques on the Internet, just as rolling your clothes for making room for others. Whatever technique you choose, make sure you are not wasting useful space in your luggage. Also, be careful not to overload your suitcase as each airline may have different weight restrictions. Having a portable scale is always a good idea.

3- Location

When you have to pack for an internship abroad, and for any other trip, it is very important that you plan your wardrobe in advance. Find out about the weather this time of the year in the city you are traveling to. Also, bring those clothes that you are certain you are going to use more than once in different outfits so that you pack only what is necessary.

4- Use water-resistant bags

Take all the sanitary products you would like to bring (shampoo, hair conditioner, moisturizer, soap, etc) and put them in small containers inside water-resistant bags. A ziplock bag will do but if you want to go more eco-friendly you can use a reusable bag. This not only prevents leaks, but it is also a way of keeping your personal products clean. You can take everything in a bag every time you shower or brush your teeth, and you keep them away from dirt or insects.

5- Bring all important documents

When you travel abroad you need to check you have packed all important documents such as passport, driver’s license, a copy of your medical insurance policy, among others. Always put them inside an envelope or plastic bag in case your bag gets wet. Every country has its own requirements. For example, if you go to Brazil you might need to get vaccinated for Yellow Fever and bring the corresponding certificate. You may be asked to pay for a visa beforehand or on arrival. Always check on the embassy’s websites whether any laws or regulations have changed. A simple detail may stop you from getting into the country.

Should anything happen to your luggage at the airport, always carry everything you need on your carry on luggage to survive at least a day: documents, an outfit, a pair of shoes, your camera, cash and credit cards, and everything you consider to be of vital importance. It is also a good idea to bring useful items, especially if you are going to a tropical country, like a universal plug, sunglasses, sunscreen, an impermeable jacket, and comfortable shoes.
