This architectural monument is located on a bay in Isla de los Estados, an island about 160 miles away from Ushuaia, which is the capital city of the province of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world. The Lighthouse at the End of the World presents an octagonal formation, which was something unusual in the era in which it operated. It had 7 oil lamps, which illuminated the voyage of those sailors who were venturous enough to navigate through the cold Antarctic waters.
This lighthouse is more than a century old and the passage of time caused its structure to weaken, leaving today only the remains of what was once the original lighthouse. A replica of the lighthouse was emplaced in 1997, in honor of Jules Verne. The new lighthouse is currently located in the same place where the original was and today it still serves as a guide to sailors.
Currently few or almost no tours reach the Lighthouse at the End of the World. The reason for this is simple: the climate is so extreme and there are not many people who can stand it. However, there are boats that go to the Island of Lobos that navigate near the lighthouse. All tours that include a trip to Isla de Lobos will allow you to see the awestruck majesty of the lighthouse at a distance. If you can stand the freezing winds during the boat tour, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful view of the lighthouse at the end of the world.
